Physicist of the Month - April 2025

Emma Järvinen is an atmospheric physicist and has been a professor at the University of Wuppertal since October 2024. Before that, she led a Helmholtz junior research group at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Her research focuses on the properties of ice crystals in the atmosphere and their impact on the climate. Her goal is to improve their representation in climate models and reduce uncertainties.

In addition to her scientific work, Emma Järvinen is deeply committed to making physics a more attractive field of study and career choice for young women. “Women have always been underrepresented in physics, but today’s challenges require contributions from everyone,” Järvinen says. She emphasizes how important diversity is for fostering creative and innovative solutions. As a professor at BUW, she is proud to be part of the mission to inspire women to pursue careers in STEM fields.
